Shampoo Assistance
Key Points
- Confirm water temperature with resident input before and during hair care.
- Protect resident comfort with face shielding, gentle scalp massage, and preference-based styling.
- Maintain clean workflow by emptying, rinsing, drying, and storing equipment before final safety checks.
- Use no-rinse products or warmed shampoo caps when standard rinsing is contraindicated.
Equipment
- Shampoo basin (for in-bed care)
- Shampoo
- Conditioner (if indicated)
- Two washcloths or small towels
- One large towel
- Gloves
- Linen bag or hamper
Procedure Steps
- Gather supplies and position them for uninterrupted care.
- Complete routine pre-procedure actions: knock, hand hygiene, respectful communication, resident identification, privacy, and explanation.
- Don gloves.
- If resident remains in bed, position shampoo basin under head/neck and direct basin drain to an approved collection container.
- Offer dry washcloth or towel to shield resident face if desired.
- Check water temperature and have resident verify comfort with hand contact or a wet washcloth on the back of the hand.
- Gently brush or comb hair to remove tangles before cleansing.
- Cleanse with rinse-based shampoo or approved no-rinse/shampoo-cap method per patient condition and product guidance.
- If using a shampoo cap, warm per manufacturer instructions when appropriate and massage scalp through the cap.
- Rinse hair thoroughly when a rinse-based method is used.
- Apply conditioner when used, massage gently, and rinse again.
- Dry hair gently, style per patient preference, and keep hair/scalp covered with a towel if needed to prevent chilling.
- While gloved, empty, rinse, dry, and store equipment; clean comb/brush before storage.
- Place soiled linens in designated hamper and remove gloves by turning inside out.
- Perform post-procedure actions: hand hygiene, comfort check, bed low/locked, call light in reach, privacy restored, repeat hand hygiene, and document/report scalp or skin changes.
Common Errors
- Skipping resident temperature confirmation → increases discomfort and thermal injury risk.
- Vigorous scrubbing during shampoo or drying → may injure fragile scalp skin.
- Inadequate rinse of shampoo/conditioner → can cause irritation and itching.
- Missing scalp-condition documentation → delays treatment of lesions, dandruff, or infection signs.
