Partial Bath Assistance

Key Points

  • Keep the resident covered as much as possible to preserve warmth and dignity.
  • Verify water warmth with resident input before bathing begins.
  • Use soap selectively (face with water only) and rinse/dry each area fully.

Equipment

  • Wash basin
  • Warm water
  • Soap
  • Lotion
  • Two washcloths
  • One towel
  • Barrier
  • Gloves
  • Clean clothes or gown
  • Linen bag or hamper

Procedure Steps

  1. Gather supplies and organize them within reach.
  2. Knock, perform hand hygiene, introduce yourself, identify the resident, provide privacy, and explain the procedure.
  3. Put on gloves.
  4. Fill the basin with warm water, place it on a flat surface with a barrier under it, and have the resident verify water temperature by hand contact.
  5. Raise bed height to a safe working level.
  6. Keep the resident covered with a bath blanket or linens, exposing only the area being washed.
  7. Wash face using water only and pat dry.
  8. Remove gown from one arm while keeping the remainder of the body covered.
  9. Place towel under the exposed arm, then wash arm, hand, and underarm with soap.
  10. Rinse arm, hand, and underarm using the second washcloth, then pat each area dry.
  11. Move to the other side and repeat arm, hand, and underarm cleansing.
  12. Discard soiled gown in linen bag/hamper and offer lotion (wear gloves when applying lotion).
  13. Assist with clean gown or clothing.
  14. While gloved, empty, rinse, dry, and store equipment.
  15. Place soiled linen in designated hamper and remove gloves by turning inside out.
  16. Perform hand hygiene, check resident comfort, lower and lock bed, place call light within reach, open privacy barriers, perform hand hygiene again, and document/report skin changes.

Common Errors

  • Skipping resident temperature check can cause discomfort or thermal injury risk.
  • Leaving multiple body areas uncovered increases cold stress and loss of dignity.
  • Missing final skin-change reporting delays follow-up for possible skin breakdown.
