Procedure Steps
- Complete routine pre-procedure actions and don gloves.
- Place supplies on barrier, apply clothing protector, and line sink.
- Remove dentures from cup or resident mouth and handle carefully.
- Wet denture brush, apply denture paste if available, and brush inner/outer/chewing surfaces thoroughly.
- Rinse dentures with clean cool water and place on clean barrier or in emesis basin.
- Rinse denture cup, place dentures in rinsed cup.
- Wet oral swab and cleanse resident gums and tongue gently.
- Allow resident to rinse and spit into basin.
- Replace dentures if desired.
- Wipe mouth and remove clothing protector to proper container.
- If dentures are not being worn, place them in a labeled, enclosed cup with cool clean water covering the dentures; add cleansing tablet if desired.
- Remove dentures before surgery/procedures when indicated and secure storage with clear labeling to prevent loss.
- Rinse brush and basin, store equipment, discard sink lining, remove gloves, and complete post-procedure safety checks with oral finding documentation.
Common Errors
- Unlined sink during denture handling → increases denture-breakage risk.
- Hot water rinsing → can warp denture material.
- Skipping gum/tongue cleansing when dentures removed → leaves oral mucosa hygiene incomplete.
- Unlabeled or open denture storage → increases loss/damage risk and delays safe return to use.
